Georgia Beer Garden and Big Bethel AME Church Host “Coffee and Cake” on MLK Day of Service

On January 21st, the MLK Day of Service, Georgia Beer Garden (420 Edgewood Ave) will host “Coffee & Cake Community Fundraiser for Big Bethel Saturday Academy” from 2 - 6pm. This lovechild of a Bake Sale and the Day of Service after party is designed to be a social hour for the many volunteers in the area, as well as a relaxed way to continue giving back to the community. Senior members of Big Bethel AME Church, the oldest African-American congregation in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood, will provide the delicious baked goods, with 100% of the proceeds going to support the Saturday Academy.

The lifelong amateur bakers will be on site that afternoon sharing not only their cakes but also their stories about an ever-changing Atlanta. Georgia Beer Garden believes in conversations and strong community bonds. We hope this will be an opportunity for people to meet someone new, hear about their lives, and share their own journeys over coffee and cake. Some of those treats will include:

      • Key Lime Cupcakes from southwest Atlanta native and Grady High alum Pamela Fleming, 65. She learned to cook at her mother’s side and has mastered everything except for her yeast rolls. Ms. Fleming has been a member of Big Bethel’s congregation her entire life. She has been witness to so much history in Atlanta. "We had friends who lived where [Interstate] 20 is today. I looked up one day and there was a concrete road between me and where my friends live. That changed everything." One constant, though, is her tangy key lime cupcakes. They may not be her mother’s famous yeast rolls, but we’re looking forward to trying them and hearing more about Ms. Fleming’s life in Atlanta.

      • Classic Pound Cake from the youthful and handy Miriam Redding, 78. Ms. Redding grew up in Lumpkin, GA, where her parents moved after surviving the Great Depression in Atlanta. "The love for cooking I got from my mother, and when she passed I started to bake the pound cakes for the family. I am the 12th of 14 children so I had to get it right." She came into the city to attend Morris Brown at the age of 18, when she became a member of Big Bethel AME. In addition to her family’s pound cake, we are excited to listen to more stories about her time here.

Sharing an alley with the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park is a big source of pride for us at Georgia Beer Garden. It is humbling to think of all the history in Sweet Auburn and exciting to be a part of a community that carries on that legacy on a daily basis. A champion of that legacy is Reverend Bessie Donaldson. We have seen, firsthand, the difference that she has made in the lives of children around the downtown area through Big Bethel Saturday Academy, a free resource and safe space for local kids offering tutoring, field trips, meals, social skill and self-esteem building, and much more. As a 501(c)(3), they are funded solely by donations so events like this are of extreme importance.

      About Georgia Beer Garden

Opened in 2016 by Johnny Martinez and Brandon Ley, owners of Joystick Gamebar, Georgia Beer Garden is a calm spot in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn district that highlights Georgia’s brewing industry and offers guests a relaxing atmosphere either inside the historically designated building or it’s surrounding garden. 100% of the beer and cider served is brewed in the State of Georgia. The knowledgeable staff can help you choose between the 24 rotating taps (available in 5, 10, and 20 oz pours) and another 100 or so in bottles and cans to find the right beer for you. About Big Bethel Saturday Academy

Run by Program Coordinator, Rev. Bessie Donaldson, the Saturday Academy is the outreach component of the Juvenile Justice Ark of Safety Community Outreach Ministry of Atlanta’s Big Bethel AME Church. It is designed to provide an outlet and assistance to youth and families in the areas of computer and academic literacy, to offer personal interactions and dialog, to address every day issues and concerns that children and families encounter, and to seek ways to provide help in eradicating the same. This is also a time for developing social skills, etiquette, building self-esteem and love for oneself with a focus on making healthy choices.

      About the Porter

The Porter Beer Bar opened in September 2008, fulfilling a long-time dream of owners Molly Gunn and Nick Rutherford. Engaged at the time of The Porter’s opening and married in October 2008, the couple met at Seeger’s, the now defunct five star restaurant in Buckhead. “While we had always worked in fine dining, when it came to our own place, we wanted something more casual, where people could come in once a week instead of once a year,” said Molly. “We only live two blocks away, so when we found this space, it was love at first sight.” Located in the heart of Little Five Points, this cozy restaurant with its hand-crafted wooden booths and exposed brick wall is the perfect place for a casual dinner of gourmet pub grub and a few glasses of one of the 44 beers on draft (including two hand pumps) or one of the 700 bottled beers available. The beer list is only micro-brews and small imports, offering pours not available at most local bars. The constantly changing specials page is where Chef Nick struts his stuff, with dishes such as Painted Hills Steak Tartare and Florida Corn Agnolotti. The regular menu reflects more traditional bar food made with fresh ingredients and new twists. Since its opening, The Porter has been consistently listed among the top ten beer bars in the world by ratebeer.com. The Porter had also been named “Best New Pub” and “Best Beer Haunt” by Atlanta Magazine. Nick Rutherford has been called a “future super star chef” by the Atlanta Journal Constitution with food critic John Kessler raving, “The daily specials list features some of the most exciting, original fare in the city.” Read more press and reviews >>

      Watershed

Watershed on Peachtree is an award-winning restaurant, located in the heart of Buckhead’s historic Brookwood Hills neighborhood. An industry pioneer in the farm-to-table movement, Watershed continues to showcase its roots in soulful Southern cuisine, while also introducing modern, ingredient-driven techniques. This concept of reverence meets innovation is driven by new executive chef and owner Matt Marcus and his passion for cooking in the moment and redefining “New South” cuisine. An Atlanta native who has always had a love for the neighborhood staple, Marcus introduces a fully reimagined menu, nodding to the seasonal, Southern roots of the beloved restaurant – but with an evolutionary, whimsical twist.

Since opening in 1999 and earning a James Beard Award in the process, previous owners Emily Saliers of the Grammy award-winning folk rock group, Indigo Girls and Ross Jones moved the restaurant from Decatur to its current Brookwood Hills location in May 2012. With a long history of talent in the kitchen, Marcus will continue to push Watershed’s menu to new culinary heights as its new executive chef and owner. While most elements will change, a few beloved traditions will stay the same, and we invite you to join our evolutionary journey.

      Matt Marcus

With more than 15 years of experience in the kitchen, Matt Marcus was born into the business as a third-generation chef who inherited a joy for cooking from his mother Annette, who operates a catering company in Atlanta. Determined to turn his passion into a career, Marcus completed studies at the American Culinary Federation Apprenticeship Program and earned several chef certifications. As he developed his culinary career, Marcus became executive chef at Hennens in Chattanooga, Tenn., in 2011. In addition, Marcus has been included in “Best Chefs America,” a guide to top talent across the country.

Upon returning to Georgia, Marcus joined the team at Buckhead’s Italian dining gem, Portofino, as executive chef in May 2014. Marcus strives to use local ingredients in the kitchen, accentuating natural flavors to highlight the simplicity of fresh fare in his recipes. Committed to customer service, Marcus takes pride in establishing relationships with guests to ensure they receive an ideal dining experience each time they walk into the restaurant. Prior to Portofino, Marcus spent time working at Atlanta local fine dining establishments including Chops, JCT Kitchen, Woodfire Grill, and Cibo e Beve.

          McPherson's Last Ride Walking Tour

Please Note: the date for this tour has been changed until March 3rd due to weather.

This unique walking tour will retrace the final (horseback) ride of Major General James Birdseye McPherson. That fateful ride began shortly after noon on July 22, 1864 just as the Battle of Atlanta was unfolding in East Atlanta. The general's ride began at the Augustus Hurt House, where he had been conferring with Maj Gen William Tecumseh Sherman and ended when he was mortally wounded by a Confederate picket in East Atlanta, where the McPherson Monument stands today.

The 4-mile tour was inspired by and is based on an article entitled, McPherson's Last Ride by author and historian, Wilbur Kurtz and published in the Atlanta Constitution Magazine on June 29, 1930. The article describes in detail the events leading up to the ride and the route taken by McPherson. We will retrace this route as closely as possible, given the changes that have occurred over the past 155 years.

Tour designed and led by Steve Saenz of ExploreATL Tours.

          The Plan

          • 1045, Breakfast at Folk Art (optional)

If you like architecture, history and amazing photo ops this tour is for you! You might call it a religious experience...

This guided tour* was inspired by an article that appeared in Curbed Atlanta in December 2016 entitled, Atlanta's Gorgeous Intown Historic Churches, Mapped!   We divided the original route into two parts: North & South. This particular tour will focus on the northern portion, which begins at the Amtrack (Peachtree) Station and ends at North Avenue. There is an optional brunch before the tour and optional get-together after the tour. The southern portion tour begins at North Avenue and ends at the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, which is near the state capitol in downtown.

PLEASE NOTE: While will gain some historical insights about the churches, this is not a history tour, per se.  Also, please keep in mind that most, if not all, of these churches have services on Sundays so we will probably not be able to access the inside of the churches. The photo gallery below will give you a very good idea of what you can expect to see on this tour.
