Interior Urbanism: Exploring John Portman’s Hotel Atriums, Office Complexes & Sky Bridges

We will explore the hotels, office plazas and sky bridges that put Atlanta on the architectural map. Join us for a tour of select Downtown Atlanta buildings designed by architect-developer John Portman. Led by Portman aficionado Dennis Lovello, the tour includes unique offices, vibrant public spaces and the ground-breaking atrium design of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Guests will also tour the innovative designs of the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel and Sun Trust Plaza.

Our Tour Guide

Dennis Lovello - Historic Preservationist and Journalist  -  is the Program Coordinator with Cobb Landmarks Historical Society.

Dennis graduated from Georgia State University in December of 2017 with a Masters Degree in Heritage Preservation.

While pursuing his master's, Dennis served as a graduate research assistant with the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, dividing his time between the Historic Preservation and Development Departments.

Dennis also holds a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Hawaii and was a producer-writer at CNN for 17 years.

He not only has a passion for John Portman, but has written about Portman extensively for his final directed readings project at GSU.  Dennis has been asked to speak as a guest lecture at Georgia State University, teaching budding and young preservationists about the architect-developer's projects around downtown Atlanta.  Dennis was also a guest panelist and speaker about Portman at the National Planning Association Convention in New Orleans in April of this year.
