ABOUT THIS EVENT

The Olmsted Plein Air Invitational is one of the most prestigious Plein Air Painting competitions in the United States and will include expanded areas throughout metro Atlanta for the Artists to paint. We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Atlanta History Center, Shops Buckhead Atlanta and the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance. The competing artists, invited by a preeminent selection jury, will paint at several Atlanta landmarks and culminating in Atlanta’s historic Olmsted Linear Park in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta. Painters will compete for on of the largest purses in the country and the the prestige of winning The Olmsted trophy.

WHAT IS "PLEIN AIR?"

En plein air, or plein air painting, is a phrase borrowed from the French equivalent meaning "open (in full) air". It is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, also called French: peinture sur le motif ("painting of the object(s) or what the eye actually sees"), where a painter reproduces the actual visual conditions seen at the time of the painting. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules; those might create a predetermined look. En plein air can also be used to describe other activities where a person partakes in an outdoor environment.
